The Opening Day Tournament has come and gone and the Eskimo Brothers have taken down their first tournament. Team-by-Team Recaps:
8.) Only Here For the Pizza (0-5)
The team didn't do too much on either side of the ball, but individually they made some noise. Marissa Traver tied for 4th in the tournament in pitching strikeouts with 10, while Maddie Ringwald ended the day with a .300 batting average. It's something to build on for future tournaments.
7.) The Water's Warm (0-5)
This finish is strange because they made a run in last year's ODT. Erb hit .517 with 4 HR and 9 RBI, but the rest of the team didn't show up at the plate. They didn't find much more success on the mound. I hope these guys will be back this year, but if not, Dave could be an intriguing pickup.
6.) Papa Jack's (2-3)
The Jack's surprised me by not placing higher, especially with Suhre pitching pretty well on the bump. They had the whole range on the schedule, starting with the two worst teams and finishing with the two best, then losing a heartbreaker to the Dawgs. Despite the finish, they're still one of the most dangerous teams in the league.
5.) Old and Retired (3-2)
Hannon and Loftus put up some good numbers throughout the day, and were on both sides of lopsided scores. They beat the Pizza girls 27-1, but also lost to the Crush 25-0. They ran into the buzzsaw that was Jimmy Cole in playoff mode, but they performed well.
4.) Pavlov's Dawgs (4-2)
They won a lot more than I thought they would, but they didn't score much. Frankel held his opponents to 7 runs in the 4 pool play games, then gave up 9 in 2 playoff games. 16 runs allowed isn't bad, but they didn't score much, only hitting 6 HR all day. Need to improve on that side to improve their standing.
3.) Freaky Franchise (4-2)
This was a weird day for the Franchise. They started by getting shut out, rolled through the next 4 opponents with Ryan Bush throwing the first no-hitter in slow pitch, then got cut in half by Jimmy Cole. Both Bush and myself had good days, but just got cold at the wrong time. Consistency needs to improve for the team to win.
2.) Caledonia Crush (5-2)
This team nearly averaged 10 runs a game, and put up gaudy pool play numbers. They cooled right off in the playoffs, and got perfecto'ed by Jimmy Cole to end the day. Regis had a ridiculous day, hitting .625 with 10 HR and 25 RBI, and also pitched well. He couldn't push them to the win though.
1.) Eskimo Brothers (5-2)
It took them a while to figure out how to hit on our fields, but once they did, they went off. They didn't score a lot of runs, but pitched well and played good defense. Jimmy Cole was a playoff machine, only giving up 3 runs in the 3 games. Ohh, and he also lead the tournament in HR and RBI. Those numbers make him the 2017 ODT MVP.
