Freaky Franchise Takes 1st Father's Day Classic
Five teams descended on Bush Grapes Park this Saturday for the First Father’s Day Classic. Much like Opening Day, the Franchise took it home, although not in the dominating fashion we saw in May. We have team-by-team recaps and awards coming up:
1.) Freaky Franchise 5-1, 8 pts. The mighty fell in round robin to the Crush, thanks to 5 walks from Tomkins. In the other games, this team shut down competition, only letting up 6 runs in the other 3 pool play games. They then capped the day off with a resounding win over CWP, and a 9-8 extra inning battle against the Crush.
2.) Caledonia Crush 5-1, 7 pts.
The Crush, led by ace Regis Pollard, came into the day as one of the favorites and they didn’t disappoint. With Regis limiting opponents to just 10 runs in pool play, and mashing by both Regis and Cody Hammond, they cruised to 4-0 and the number one seed come playoffs. They had a scare against the Loons in pool play, but got by Papa Jack’s only to lose a heartbreaker in extras to the Franchise.
3.) Crazy White Pitches 2-3, 4 pts.
CWP came in to the party a little late and had to sweat through 4 straight games starting at noon. The beat the Loons pretty handily, squeaked by the Jacks, lost to the Franchise and got pummeled by the Crush before losing to the Franchise again in the playoffs. The late start really made them push in the afternoon heat, but Roeder and Coyk once again carried the load. Despite the record, they sit second in runs scored.
4.) Papa Jack’s 2-3, 4 pts.
The Jack’s came back with the same group as last time and had a similar performance. They lost to the Franchise and Crush in the early morning before getting scared by a surprising Loons team, ultimately beating them. They then nearly beat CWP to close out pool play. They got their first playoff win against the Loons before falling at Regis’ feet. This team continues to mash home runs and the pitching got better.
5.) Crazed Loons 0-5, 1 pt.
Pete did not have a good Opening Day, but you can’t say that about this tournament. Add in the revelation that was Nick “RePete” Ciolek and you had a dangerous 1-2 punch. They didn’t get a single win once again, but they put a scare into both the Jacks (5 innings) and Crush (6 innings). They also almost got the job done against the Jack’s in the playoffs, but fell 6-5. This team didn’t pitch particularly well, but if they could put it all together they’ll win some games.
