2014 NWLA Champions Roster Release

April 14, 2014

We just wanted to be the first to release our official roster for the 2014 NWLA Tournament. The rules call is coming up next month, and regardless of whether or not they raise the maximum to 8 players, we have a set roster. It features the regular four, and then two other guys.

#2 Chris Roeder- P/IF        Bats: S        Throws: R

Roeder is one of the new additions to the Freaky Franchise roster this year. He’s also the reigning OCWA MVP and Pitcher of the Year. He’s a switch hitter, a natural righty but with more power on the left side. Last year, he led the league in every major category except for wins, which his teammate Tim Coykendall won. His ERA the last two seasons has been sub-1, and he ranks second in all-time ERA. If you consider Ryan Bush to be OCWA’s #1 pitcher, expect Roeder to be the #1a.

#3 Justin Tomkins-IF/EH        Bats: R        Throws: R

Justin Tomkins recently joined the NWLA Tournament Organizing Committee, and is the managerial representative for the OCWA. He doesn’t excel in any category, but had a good tournament last year. He struggled slightly at the plate, hitting .224 with 4 homers and 14 RBI. He made up for it on the mound. He pitched 15 innings, splitting time as the #2 pitcher with Brett Bigler. He posted a 5.64 ERA, but went 1-0, the win coming in a crucial game with HRL. He comes into this year hoping to improve on his hitting and provide in relief and maybe a spot start.

#10 Tim Coykendall-P/EH        Bats: R        Throws: R

Coykendall is new to wiffle, but he had a fantastic rookie season. He won the OCWA Rookie of the Year, hitting .333 with 11 homers. He really shined on the mound, posting a respectable 5.20 ERA. Coyk also won 11 games as a pitcher, tied for the most in a single season in history. This season, you can expect him to improve on those numbers. He will compete for the third rotation spot, if that rule is passed, as well as being a key hitter in the lineup.

#11 Ryan Bush-P/IF        Bats: L        Throws: R

Ryan Bush is an elite wiffler, but you already knew that. The 2012 Tournament MVP came back for more last year, and won the Inaugural Home Run Derby. He also posted nearly the exact same pitching stats as he did in ‘012: 25 IP, 0.96 ERA, 63 K. He also produced at the plate, hitting .373 while slugging 9 homers and 31 RBI. In other news, he finished second to Roeder in most major categories last season in OCWA, and was named the GSWL Pitching Rookie of the Year. He’ll be back again this season, anchoring the Franchise on the mound and at the plate.

#18 Jon Suhre-EH        Bats: R        Throws: R

“Primetime” Jon Suhre is the guy who will get you whatever you need in order to win. He is one of the most dependable guys on the whole roster. You need wins? He’ll get them, as he had 11 in 2012. You need a guy who gets on base? He has one of the highest OBP’s in the league. He had a great tournament in 2013, hitting .288 with 5 homers and 29 RBI. He also saw his first ever NWLA Tournament appearance on the mound against TBW. The added depth will likely push him out of a pitching spot for this year, but he will continue to do what he needs to do at the plate.

#22 Brett Bigler-P/OF        Bats: R        Throws: R

Last but certainly not least is the man known as “Thor”, or more commonly, “Biggie”. This guy pounds the ball and the zone.  He has a career average of .460, and is known for hitting the cover off of the ball. In recent years he has found a pitching groove, and threw his first career no-hitter in 2013. He had a fantastic tournament in 2013. He led the tournament in homers with 10, and has the all-time lead with 16. He averaged .400, and had 29 RBI. He also pitched 10 innings, going 2-2, and striking out 11. He will compete for the third pitching spot on this year’s team, and play outfield when he’s not pitching.
